Nitriding
Nitriding
A thermochemical heat treatment process that diffuses nitrogen into the surface of a metal to form a hard, wear-resistant case.
In this process, nitrogen atoms penetrate the surface of primarily low-alloy steels and react with alloying elements such as iron, chromium, molybdenum, and aluminum to form hard metallic nitrides. The result is a case-hardened layer that significantly enhances surface hardness, wear resistance, fatigue strength, and corrosion resistance, while the core material retains its original toughness and ductility.
Nitriding is typically performed at relatively low temperatures (approximately 500–600 °C), which minimizes distortion and dimensional change compared to carburizing.
The nitrided structure generally consists of a thin compound layer (often referred to as the white layer) and an underlying diffusion zone, where nitrogen is dispersed and nitride precipitates are formed. Case depth commonly ranges from 200–300 µm up to 2 mm, depending on process parameters such as temperature, time, and nitrogen potential.
